Chapter 19: Spin Cycle
The laundry room was in the basement, behind a door marked Staff, and Anders and I stood outside it with our ears against the wood.
We had not planned to eavesdrop. We had planned to knock.
"It's a gold satin gown," Bree was saying inside, in a voice that had lost all its warmth. "It cost nine hundred dollars, and it says hand wash only, and you will wash it by hand."
"Bree, I'm trying to talk about clause nine."
"I don't care about clause nine."
"I'll lose everything!"
"That," said Bree, "is the point."
Anders eased the door open an inch, and we looked in.
Tobin stood by the big steel sink with his sleeves already rolled. Bree stood with her back to the washing machine, with a suitcase at her feet and her ring light under her arm.
The gown hung on the drying rack between them, glowing gold.
"A man with nothing is a man I can't post," Bree said. "My followers watched a Carrow hand-wash my underwear for three hours. They want more."
"It was a joke!"
"It was nine hundred thousand views." She held up her phone. "Lather and Company wants me. Their whole spring campaign. Soap, Tobin. Real money, with a contract and a car."
"So you're leaving me for a detergent."
"I'm leaving you for a contract and a car," said Bree. "They want the gala. They want the real husband, live, and the sink, and you in it."
Tobin looked at her.
"The sink," he said.
"It's a segment. They're calling it The Wash. You say the application has your name, you announce the marriage is void, and you hand-wash this gown on stage. It's twelve minutes."
