Chapter 5: Cake for the Newlyweds

Helen Carrow crossed the lobby faster than a woman her age should.

She stopped in front of Anders and me and held the cake box against her chest.

"There they are," she said. "My newlyweds."

Anders and I had just let go of each other's hands. We were standing at exactly the wrong distance apart.

"Mom," Anders said.

"Tobin," Helen said, and smiled at him with great warmth.

"I'm Anders."

"Of course you are, dear. I'm so tired, I mix you up."

Helen Carrow has never once mixed up her sons.

She had told me so herself, on my first day in her house.

I opened my mouth, and she turned her bright brown eyes on me, and I closed it again.

"Leonie, sweetheart, you look radiant," she said. "Wedding nights do that."

"Thank you," I said, and meant nothing by it.

Tobin came back across the lobby with Bree's coffee in one hand and the laundry bag in the other.

He saw his mother and stopped dead.

"Mom!"

"Tobin, darling." Helen kissed his cheek, then looked down at the bag. "What on earth is that?"

"Dry cleaning."

"At a hotel? On your wedding night?"

"It's the suit," Tobin said. "The groom's suit. For the, uh, day after."

"I see," said Helen. "And who is this lovely girl?"

Bree stepped up beside him, still in the robe.

"I'm Bree, Mrs. Carrow. I'm Tobin's oldest friend. I came in last night to be the maid of honor, and I got the wrong hotel, and I'm so embarrassed."
