Chapter 22: Her Own Door
Gemma's POV
Luca had me against the inside of my own front door before Marco's sedan reached the bottom of the hill.
The house was bare, and it smelled of paint and cold pine.
He had turned the lock behind us with the key he had put in my palm a moment earlier.
He had not looked at the house once.
He looked at me.
"Gemma," he said, rough, with both hands braced on the wood on either side of my head.
"Say it the way you meant to."
"I don't know how," he said.
"Then show me."
He kissed me.
It was not careful.
It was deep and hungry and shaking, with his scarred hands buried in my hair and his whole body pressing me to the door.
I kissed him back with every ounce I had.
I pulled his shirt out of his trousers and put my hands on his hot bare back.
He groaned into my mouth.
Out on the porch, someone laughed softly, and Dario's voice said, "Good night, you animals."
A car door slammed.
The three of them were gone, and the house was ours.
Luca had signed the lease on Wednesday with my name beside his.
On the refrigerator, Nico had taped a sheet showing the rent split five ways, every share the same, mine at the bottom.
Nobody was paying for me.
Everybody was paying.
I had cried over that sheet for ten minutes in the kitchen, and I did not want to think about it now.
I wanted to think about nothing at all.
"Take it off," I said, and pulled at his collar.
"The shirt?"
"All of it. Mine too."
"Slowly," he said, as he always did.
"No."
His hands stopped on my buttons.
"Luca. Stop being careful."
His eyes closed.
"You said it at the canyon," I said, into his throat.
"You said you wanted to be inside me when you stopped being careful. Do it."
His breath shuddered out of him.
"I could hurt you."
"You have never hurt me in your life."
"I use these hands for one thing," he said. "I don't want them to ever touch you the way they touch other men."
"They don't," I said. "They never have. Show me what they do for me."
