Chapter 27: Siege
We went up the cliff path the back way, through the kitchen garden, past the bitter-mint by the compost heap.
The yard was full of black coats.
A hundred border soldiers at least, in lines, with spears. Varrick's own men, from Varrick's own forts.
His sergeant stood on the hall steps with a horn.
"All cadets to the great hall," he bellowed. "By order of the Lord Marshal. Unarmed. Now."
Cadets were coming out of the towers in their nightshirts, blinking.
Some of them started toward the hall.
"If they go in," Lysander said, "he has two hundred hostages instead of one."
Roan was already moving.
He walked straight out across the yard in front of a hundred spears and stopped at the foot of the men's tower.
"Second year," he said.
He didn't shout. He didn't have to.
"Back inside. Bar the doors."
The cadets on the steps stopped.
They looked at him. Then at the soldiers.
Then a girl who'd stood at the whipping post turned around and walked back into the women's tower.
