Chapter 30: The Vale
The old lord opened the chronicle again and read it to the whole hall.
When a royal is twin-bound, the two packs of her mates swear to her together. Neither stands above the other. What they fought over, they hold as one.
He shut the book.
"That's the law," he said. "It's been sitting in a library under a chain for a thousand years. Nobody thought we'd need it."
The Ingleby lord looked at the Dunstan lord.
Neither of them said anything.
It was nearly dawn before anybody slept.
In the morning they took Varrick away.
A prison cart came up from the village, an open one with iron bars, pulled by two old horses. The soldiers who'd laid down their spears marched beside it.
The whole school lined the road from the hall steps to the gate.
Nobody had ordered it this time.
Varrick sat in the cart in his shirtsleeves. No braid. No black coat. His wrists in the raider's chains.
