Chapter 23: The Meeting
My mother chose a diner in Dublin, a place with red booths and bad coffee, where nobody she knew would ever eat.
She sat with her back to the wall.
She had no blazer, no pearls, no phone on the table.
Her hair was pulled back in a plain clip.
She looked ten years older, and not at all sleek.
I slid into the booth across from her.
Wade and Julian stayed at the counter, ten feet away, two grown men with coffees they were not drinking.
"Thank you for coming," she said.
"You said just you."
"They're not at the table."
"They're not far."
A waitress poured coffee and went away.
My mother turned her cup around in its saucer.
"Graham's gone," she said. "He took the Marlow Court listings and left the firm. I'm closing the office."
"I'm sorry," I said, and meant almost none of it.
"I deserved it." She looked up. "I'm not here to ask you for anything."
"Good."
"I wanted to say I did a terrible thing."
I waited.
"I thought you'd be a footnote," she said. "I thought you'd be embarrassed and I could send you to my sister's for a year. I never thought you'd stand up in my dining room."
