Chapter 11: The Moon-Run

Ward Standish read the retraction the night before, live, with his jaw clenched so hard I could see the muscle jump.

"The council withdraws the word wolfless," he read, "and regrets that it was ever spoken of Linnet Averill."

Rodrick played it back for me six times, and the last time he made popcorn.

It did not make me feel better.

The run was tomorrow, and I had never shifted once.

At dusk the next day, four hundred wolves filled the meadow at Aspen Hollow.

Ridgeline stood on the north side with their silver pins, and Northfang on the south in black.

Dorian Falkner stood at the front of his pack with his hands in his coat pockets.

When he saw me, he lifted his chin.

The moon stones stood in the center of the meadow, a pale ring in the snow.

Ward and the council had taken the east bank, and Brynn stood beside her father in a pale coat.

She did not look at me.

"The rule is simple," said the thin elder, who had been chosen to call the run. "Anyone who claims blood walks into the ring at moonrise and shifts. If the wolf comes, the claim stands. If it does not, the claim fails."

"What do I lose if it fails?" I asked.

"The claim, and the Gathering," Ward said. "It's clause nine, Ms. Averill. Your own conduct clause."

He had read the contract after all.
