Chapter 17: The Seat
Rodrick drove us up the mountain with the heater roaring and both hands strangling the wheel.
Rafe was waiting in the car park at Aspen Hollow, and he took one look at my bare neck.
"Who?" he said.
"Brynn. Her father's orders."
His whole body changed.
I put my hand on his chest before he could shift where he stood.
"Not yet," I said. "Everyone is watching."
They were.
Four hundred wolves had come up from the road and filled the meadow in the dark, the Ridgeline pins on the north bank and Northfang's black coats on the south.
Torches burned in iron brackets around the ring of stones.
Ward Standish stood in the center, in the open, in a long dark coat.
He had my locket in his fist.
The chain hung down between his fingers and swung in the torchlight.
"Wolves of three packs," he said, and his voice rolled out across the snow. "I called this Gathering early because the old law demands it. The silver has been taken from a woman who has never earned it."
A rumble ran round the meadow.
"I called the Warden's line a trick in that meadow. It was not.
"The line is real, and I have always known it. But the law does not say the line shall rule. The law says the one who holds the silver holds the stones." He lifted the locket high. "And tonight I hold it."
The stones were dark.
Ward looked at them, and I saw him see it.
He pulled the locket in against his chest, and the ring stayed black and cold.
"It will wake," he said. "Give it a moment."
Nothing happened.
Somebody in the Northfang ranks laughed out loud.
Ward rounded on the crowd, and I watched him find the one face he wanted.
