Chapter 7: The Storm Cabin

I told Rafe I needed to check the back gate, and I went to meet Brynn alone.

The gatehouse cabin stood at the bottom of the grounds, a one-room log building where the groundskeeper kept his tools.

Brynn was already inside, sitting on an upturned crate with her coat zipped to her chin.

She stood up the moment I shut the door.

"You came."

"You said you'd tell me everything."

"I will. I have about ten minutes before my father notices the car is gone."

She pulled a flat leather folder out of her coat and held it against her chest.

"Dad has had a file on your family for years," she said. "I found it when I was nineteen. It has your mother's name in it."

My throat tightened.

"What does it say?"

"I only read the first page. It says the Averill line should never be allowed near the moon stones on a full moon. It says if you ever stood in that ring at the right time, he'd lose everything."

"Lose what?"

"I don't know. He caught me reading it, and he told me to forget it."

"Then why tell me now?"

Brynn's eyes filled.

"Because last night at dinner he said you'd be a problem the pack can't afford," she said. "He said it about you, to my face."

She held out the folder.

I reached for it.

Thunder cracked over the valley, so close the windows rattled.

The wind hit the cabin from the north, and a sheet of white came down across the glass.
