Chapter 9: What Rafe Owed

Rafe's POV

I drove back down the mountain with her scent still on my collar and my mouth still burning.

Rodrick Averill's truck was parked across the lodge entrance with its lights on.

He stood in front of it with his arms folded.

He was the same height as me and had never once been afraid of me, which I had always liked about him.

"Get out," he said.

I got out.

"My sister drove past me forty minutes ago, and she was crying, and she said she was fine." He took a step forward. "What did you do?"

"I kissed her."

"That's not what I asked."

"Then yes," I said. "I did something I had no right to. Before that, I did something worse. I want you to hear it."

"You've got five minutes before the council vote."

"I'll need less."

I leaned against my own truck, because my legs were not entirely mine.

"The night before Founders' Night," I said, "Ward Standish came to my house with a list."

"What list?"

"Fourteen names. Wolves in the pack. Two of them were children's guardians."

Rodrick's face did not change.

"He said that if I didn't name Brynn, those fourteen would be declared rogue under the old law. Anyone could hunt them, legally, and the council would look away."

"He can't do that."

"He can if nine of eleven council seats vote it. He'd already counted nine."

"So you gave up my sister to keep the list from getting hunted."

"I gave her up in public," I said, "so the council would believe I'd given her up."

"That's a very elaborate way to be a coward, Rafe."
