Chapter 18: Everyone Remembers
Mom carried me down the stairs.
I am sixteen and nearly her height.
She carried me anyway, with both arms around my waist and my feet barely touching the steps.
"Glenn remembered at midnight," she said into my hair. "He's been standing in the yard since. He won't come in until he's sure."
"Sure of what?"
"That he isn't dreaming," she said, and laughed, and cried.
The kitchen was full.
The twins were standing on chairs.
The baby launched himself at me before I reached the bottom step.
"Don't ever do that again," he said into my shoulder. "Don't ever be forgotten again."
"I'll try," I said.
"I wrote you a note on my hand and it washed off in the shower and I cried in the shower," he said. "Nobody has to know that."
"Everyone knows that," said one of the twins.
The middle two came in from the porch with their arms full of firewood, saw me, and dropped all of it on the floor.
Nobody said a word about the firewood.
Ellis stood in the corner by the stove with his sleeve pushed up.
The ink on his forearm had faded to a gray smudge, and he was holding it out so that I could see it.
"WYNN," he said. "I never got the rest of it clean."
"Good," I said.
He crossed the kitchen in two steps, and picked me up off the floor, and didn't say anything at all.
By ten o'clock half the pack was in our yard.
They came one at a time and then in groups, with plates of food and their hats in their hands, and each of them stopped in front of me and looked a long time before they spoke.
