Dovie's POV
I said it across the pasture, and he turned around slowly with snow on his bare shoulders.
"It isn't payment," Duncan said. "It's a stone."
"Then why did you carry it down here before light?"
"Because she was lying under six creek rocks, and somebody had to."
His voice was rough, and he did not come toward me.
I walked to the stone.
I read it twice, with my glove on the cold letters.
Went up Yellow Mountain for a boy.
He had cut it himself. I could tell by the second A, which leaned.
"Put your coat on," I said. "You'll freeze."
"Dovie."
"Put it on, and go home, and don't come back today."
He put it on, and went.
I stood by my mother's grave until my feet were numb.
It was the first Thanksgiving of my life that nobody had asked me to cook.
On Tuesday morning a deacon's wife came down the pasture road with a ham in a pan.
"Brother Loyal sends it," she said, pleased. "He's so glad the Lord brought you home, Dovie. He says the cabin's yours as long as you want it."
