Chapter 22: Twenty-Seven

I tied his wrists behind the kitchen chair with Dessie's apron strings, and he let me.

It was an hour before dawn on the fifteenth of January, and I was twenty-seven.

Dessie slept like the dead until six.

The kitchen was dark and warm, with the banked stove ticking and a pan of dough rising under a cloth.

Duncan sat in the straight chair in his open shirt and trousers with his boots off.

He had followed me down the back stairs in the dark, because I had asked him to.

"Is that too tight?" I said, and pulled the knot.

"No."

"Can you get loose?"

"Probably." His voice was low and rough. "I won't."

I walked around in front of him and stood there in my nightgown.

"It's my birthday," I said. "I get what I want."

"What do you want?"

"I want you to sit there, and watch, and do not touch me until I say."

His pale eyes went black.

"Yes, ma'am," he said, hoarse.

I pulled the nightgown over my head and dropped it on the flagstones.

I stood naked in front of him in the cold kitchen.

His eyes moved over me slowly, and I watched his throat work.

"Look at you," he said. "God, Dovie."

"Quiet."

He closed his mouth.

I hitched myself up on the long scarred table, and sat on the edge of it, with my feet on the rung of the chair beside him.

I leaned back on one hand and opened my knees.

"Watch my hand," I said.

I slid it down my belly.

I was already slick.

I touched myself with two fingers, slowly, circling my clit, and I made sure he could see.

He strained forward against the strings, and the chair creaked.

"Dovie," he said. "Let me."

"No."

"Please."

"No." I smiled at him. "You can look. That's all you get."
