Chapter 7: The Sing

The Yellow Mountain church holds the Sing on the fourth Sunday of October.

It is a white board building with no steeple and a tin roof, and it sits in a clearing full of red maples.

Dessie had bought me a dress in Spruce Pine on Friday.

It was navy wool with a collar, and it fit.

Nobody had ever bought me a dress before.

"Not borrowed," she said, and put the bag in my arms, and did not let me thank her.

Inside, the benches were set in a hollow square, four sides facing in, and the singers sat by their part.

I had grown up on Sacred Harp.

Elk Fork sings it too, though they sing it thin and I had always sung it under my breath, from the kitchen.

Here, a hundred and fifty people opened their mouths and the whole room shook.

Dessie sat on the bass side, in the front row, with her book open on her knee.

Duncan sat beside her.

I had not known he sang.

He stood up when the leader called the number.

The bass line came out of him deep and plain, with no tremble in it at all.

I sat on the tenor bench with a borrowed book and found I knew the tune.

I sang.
