Chapter 21: The Promise
Ezra's POV
From the third row I could see the side of Tripp's face, and it was already losing color.
He held the microphone with both hands.
"I told her I'd stake my life," he said again. "I want to make it right. Tonight. Right here."
The room had gone very still.
I had wired nine hundred thousand dollars on the strength of his voice, and now I listened to it and heard what Mara must have heard for two years.
It was warm, and it was always about him.
Mara stood three feet away from him with the hospital bracelet bright on her wrist.
She didn't look angry.
She looked ready.
"Okay," she said.
Tripp blinked.
"Okay?"
"You said you'd stake your life on it. I don't want your life, Tripp. I want you to put your name to it."
She reached into her cardigan pocket and took out a folded sheet of paper, and a pen.
She held both out to him.
"I wrote one line this afternoon. Read it out loud."
He unfolded it.
His lips moved, and I saw him get to the end.
"Read it so they can hear," Mara said.
"I, Tripp Aldridge," he read, and his voice cracked, "personally owe Mara Ostrow every dollar taken from her, and if I do not repay it, I give her all my shares of Halyard Labs."
A man behind me whispered, "Jesus."
"That's it," Mara said. "That's all it says. Sign it, and I'll let you apologize as long as you like."
Tripp looked at the pen.
It was a plain black ballpoint, the kind a bank leaves on a chain.
