Chapter 19: The Board
Sabina's POV
The Wexley boardroom was on the fourteenth floor, and I walked in at four minutes past nine.
Nine people sat around a long oak table. At the head, in a soft grey suit and her pearls, was Constance.
She saw me and did not flinch.
"This is a private meeting," she said pleasantly.
"I'm told the first item concerns the Foundation's money," I said. "I'm the woman who is supposed to have stolen it."
Quentin sat at the far end with his hands folded. He didn't look at me, because we'd agreed he wouldn't.
An older man on Constance's right cleared his throat.
"Let her speak, Constance. Five minutes won't hurt the vote."
"The vote is about my son's fitness, not a stranger's grievance."
"The grievance is four hundred thousand dollars of ours," the old man said. "Five minutes."
Constance inclined her head, and her smile did not move.
I took a small speaker out of my bag and set it on the polished wood.
"You've all heard a recording of me," I said. "It was played to two hundred guests and then to the whole internet."
I looked down the table.
"It says the Wexleys are old money fools. It says Quentin has soft hands, and I plan to use them."
Somebody shifted in a chair.
"I kept the originals," I said. "I mailed them to the Foundation's front desk from my kitchen, over three months, addressed to Quentin. Nobody ever answered."
"And?"
"May I play two?"
Nobody answered, so I pressed the button.
My own voice filled the room, warmer and lazier than the one in the ballroom.
At the end of the table Quentin went white.
"Your uncle says the Wexleys are old money, and the whole family's a bunch of fools when he loses at cards.
