Chapter 24: The Deck
The roof of the parking deck had changed.
I climbed to level six at dawn on Tuesday with a thermos of coffee and found the old yellow security light gone.
Where the pole had stood, a low raised bed of dark soil ran along the east parapet.
It was planted with yellow tulips in a ragged, half-finished row.
The nurses had done it with trowels after their shifts.
A stone bench sat beside it.
Rafe stood at the parapet in his shirtsleeves, with the sun coming up orange behind the river.
He turned when he heard me.
"It's the quietest place in the city," he said. "I told you that once. I was wrong."
"You were being honest."
"I was being stupid." He came over. "I didn't know whose roof I was standing on. I know now. I'd like to change what it's for."
He took a small black box out of his pocket.
He knelt on the concrete.
"I bought this at a jewelry store with my own money," he said. "I wanted you to know it wasn't Corliss money. It isn't forty dollars this time."
