Chapter 6: Mrs. Corliss
On Tuesday morning I put on the gray cardigan, put Rafe's black badge in my pocket, and went to the basement.
Medical Records had its own floor.
It was a long gray room of filing cabinets and one reception desk.
Behind the desk sat a woman with a lanyard covered in cartoon cats.
"Employee files are restricted," she said before I opened my mouth. "Are you looking for a job, hon?"
"I'm looking for a file."
"Sweetie, I can see that. Which department sent you?" she said.
"Nobody sent me. I'm Mrs. Corliss."
She looked at me from the cardigan to the flat shoes.
"Mrs. Corliss is in the executive suite. The new one just married the boss, and I read about her. She's got a very expensive coat."
"It's in the car," I said.
"Mm-hm."
I took the black badge with the red stripe out of my pocket and set it on her desk.
Rafe had put it in my hand.
She turned it over with one finger.
Then she looked at my face, and then at the photo of a different face on the card, and her eyes went wide.
"That's the CEO's badge."
"He lent it to me. Mine is printed tonight. Would you like to call him to ask?"
"No, ma'am," she whispered.
"Then I would like a coffee, and the personnel file for Maureen Rooney, registered nurse, operating-room staff, terminated April of fourteen years ago."
"Terminated?" she asked.
"Deceased."
She gave me the coffee first, and her hands shook only a little.
Four hours later I was still in the basement.
The personnel file was a thin gray folder, and almost nothing was in it.
A hire date, sixteen years back.
Annual reviews, all excellent.
A line that said she'd been recruited by the Chief Nursing Officer as a favor.
Then a one-page separation form dated April nineteenth.
