Chapter 17: What the Wolf Gave Back
Remy's POV
The man with the scarred jaw died on Odalie's steel table, and he died breathing easy.
I was there.
I want that on the record somewhere, because nobody else will keep it.
We had carried him in from the levee the Sunday before, and Odalie had put her hand on his chest and given him a week.
It was a good week.
He ate boudin at her table on Wednesday and told Bastien about a catfish he had once caught that weighed more than the boy.
On Tuesday afternoon he asked to lie down in the shed, in the cool, and nobody thought anything of it.
At five past three the woman who had been sitting with him came to the kitchen door with her hand over her mouth.
By the time we crossed the lot he had stopped.
I stood by the table and looked at him.
He had a wedding ring that had been bent once and hammered flat.
Somebody had folded his hands over it.
I thought, I carried you, I picked you up off the gravel, and I never learned your name.
I asked the woman who had sat with him.
She said she was sorry, she did not know it either.
He had come in from the Pierre Part side two years ago and kept to himself.
That was the pack I had been the Alpha of.
I stood there with that for a long time.
Odalie did not come in.
I knew she was standing outside the bay door with her arms crossed, because I could hear Bastien asking what had happened.
