Chapter 6: Good Weather

I put my hand over his and left it there.

"I'd like that," I told Miles.

He turned his palm upward under mine.

For a while we ate without making another arrangement.

I liked the ordinary clatter from the other tables.

Nobody in the restaurant expected me to remember their room numbers.

Miles paid for his meal and I paid for mine.

He didn't make a joke about my choice.

Outside, the inn's terrace lights had come on.

I stopped beside a small bench above the beach.

"We could walk down there," Miles suggested.

He pointed to the flat wooden path along the sand.

I looked at the clouds over the far side of the bay.

"It's going to rain," I said.

Miles followed my gaze.

"Is that from the briefing?" he asked.

"It's from looking at the sky," I told him.

He glanced at the bench and the path again.

"Then let's see how far we get," he said.

I reached automatically for the large bag I hadn't brought.

My small purse held my phone and a lipstick.

Neither was useful for a sudden change in the weather.

"I don't have an umbrella," I said.

Miles opened his empty hands.

"Neither do I," he told me.

I looked at the neat cuffs of his new shirt.

I'd let the evening become something I couldn't properly manage.
