Chapter 9: What Kendra Heard
"Cost me what?"
Kendra looked around the parking lot.
Then she tapped her phone and held it up between us.
The sound was a kitchen.
Plates. A spoon against a cup.
Then Elaine's voice, clear.
"I picked her the day he brought her by. Healthy, no family, a waitress. Nobody to make trouble. Three boys, the trust vests, and she's out."
Then Peter.
"I know, Mom. You don't have to keep saying it."
"I'll keep saying it until she's gone."
Kendra stopped it.
The whole clip was over in moments.
I kept my face still.
My stomach did not stay still.
"When did you record that?"
"A month before you found the papers. At your kitchen table. I was sitting right there eating your leftover lasagna." She slid the phone into her coat. "Elaine talks in front of me like I'm furniture. She does it to everybody."
"Why record it?"
"Because Peter said he'd marry me when the divorce was done. And Elaine said over her dead body." She shrugged. "A girl needs insurance."
"And now?"
"Now the state's attorney wants to talk to me about lying on a court paper. And Peter won't answer my calls. And Elaine says I'm on my own."
