Chapter 24: The Life He Chose

The gray people led my parents away down the pale hall.

My mother walked backward as far as she was allowed, and then the hall bent, and she was gone.

I stood in front of the dark window for a while.

"You told them the truth," the King of the Underworld said, behind me, "and you did not make them pay for it twice."

I had only one thing left to ask him.

"Is Ada all right?"

"Look."

I turned.

Across the hall, near the head of the old line, a woman in a faded blue housecoat sat on a plain bench with her arm around an older woman's shoulders.

They were talking low, and neither of them looked in a hurry.

Ada saw me watching.

She lifted her free hand and waved it twice.

"Say it first," she called, across all that pale floor.

"I will," I called back.

I didn't know what I meant by it.

I only knew she was right.

At the far side of the hall, the thin figure in the black suit still stood facing the wall.

He had been there the whole time.

I walked toward him, and I stopped three feet away.

"Pierce."

He did not turn.

"You were scared," I said. "I believe that. I believe you meant it when you said it."

His shoulders moved.

"I'm still not going to say it," I said. "I want you to know I thought about it. I gave it a real minute. I'm not saying it."

He nodded at the wall, once.

"Okay," Pierce said, very small.
