Chapter 16: Ruth's Answer
Cora's POV
Ruth arrived carrying a paperback and a bag of oranges.
An assistant offered to put the bag somewhere less visible.
"I bought them on the way," Ruth said. "They haven't signed a confidentiality agreement."
I laughed before I remembered I didn't know whether she wanted to speak to me.
Sadie stood beside me with her hands in her pockets.
"I told the host what happened," I said.
"I heard," Ruth said.
She put the oranges down and faced Sadie.
"You should have told me whose line it was," Ruth said.
"I know," Sadie said.
Ruth told her she had watched a recording of the little show.
"The family weather piece is good," she said.
Sadie looked startled, then pleased.
"Thank you," Sadie said.
Ruth turned to me. "I appreciate you saying it plainly. I'm still angry."
"I won't ask you to pretend otherwise," I said.
Ruth nodded once, picked up her oranges, and went to record her interview.
We watched it on the waiting-room monitor, Miles's sleeve against mine.
"How do you feel after Cora's admission?" the host asked.
