Cora's POV
Wesley brought the ice in a plain bag and the labels in an envelope.
Miles thanked him for the ice and pointed him toward the kitchen.
I looked at the envelope.
"Place cards," Wesley explained.
"A small joke."
Sadie arrived behind him carrying the yellow flowers I'd given her.
She'd moved them into another jar so they could travel.
Ruth followed with bread because somebody had actually asked for it.
Miles introduced me as his partner when he took their coats.
Nobody gasped or demanded an explanation.
Sadie kissed my cheek and asked where the flowers belonged.
I pointed toward the table, pleased by how ordinary the introduction had felt.
Wesley opened his envelope while Miles brought the pot over.
He put five folded cards beside the plates.
Mine said THE STAR.
