Chapter 16: The Inn
The inn gave us two rooms and I had put Amaia in the far one, at the end of the landing, with a riders' watch on the stair and the cook's girl's brother asleep across her door.
The wall between her room and ours was a foot of stone and plaster.
I had measured it with my hand.
Aitor shut our door and set the bar across it and stood with his back against the wood.
He was in his shirt.
He had not slept in two nights, and he had the look of a man who had decided something and was afraid to say it.
"You're to say nothing," I said.
"Not tonight.
"Tonight you do what I tell you."
"Yes," he said.
The window gave on the meadow and the oak, and the moon lay across the floor in a long pale slab.
There was a bed with a straw tick and a red wool cover, and a candle in a tin holder.
I did not light it.
I took off my brother's coat and hung it on the peg.
I took off the shirt, and the binding I no longer wore, and my trousers, and I stood in the moonlight on the bare boards and let him look.
"Come here," I said.
He crossed the room in three strides.
I put my hand flat on his chest, and I felt him shake.
"Take it all off," I said.
He stripped faster than I had seen him do it.
He stood with the moon on his shoulders, huge and scarred and shaking.
When I looked down he was hard already, heavy against his stomach.
I put my hand around him.
He made a sound through his teeth.
"On the bed," I said.
"On your face?" he said, with a ragged half laugh.
"No," I said.
"That is mine."
I pushed him back and he sat on the edge of the straw tick.
I knelt on the boards between his knees.
He stared down at me with his mouth open.
"Itziar, you don't..."
"I want to," I said.
"I have wanted to since the bell tower, when you were on your knees to me.
"I want to see what you look like."
I took him in my mouth.
