Chapter 13: Everyone Believes the Bride

I did not argue with her.

I picked up the prepaid phone I had bought in Traverse City, and I dialed the number on the back of my card.

Lacey watched me do it, and her thumb turned the ring on her finger.

The fraud line answered on the second ring.

"Nora Pruitt, card ending 4417," I said. "I need it closed now, and I need to dispute nineteen thousand four hundred dollars at a florist."

"One moment." Keys clicked. "Ms. Pruitt, that upgrade was approved Thursday afternoon, after a verification code went to the phone number on file."

"Read me the number."

She read it out.

It was my old number, the one that had gone dark at the gate.

"That phone isn't mine anymore," I said. "Somebody else has been getting my codes."

Across the kitchen, Lacey studied her nails.

"I'm taking that number off your account right now," the woman said. "The card is closed, the charge is flagged as fraud, and a new card goes out overnight."

"Thank you."

"Do you know who controls that line?"

"I do," I said. "She's standing in the kitchen."

I hung up.

Wes had not moved from my side, but his jaw had gone hard.

Meg looked at the floor.

Lacey let out a soft, sad laugh.

"Oh, Nor," she said. "You really are going to do this."

She picked up her own phone and dialed with the ring hand, and she put it on speaker before it rang.
