Chapter 18: The Harlow Room

The Harlow Room had a gold door and a manager in a navy suit who stood up when we came in.

I had asked for the meeting myself, by email, on Wednesday night.

It was Thursday at ten, and everyone I had asked was already at the table.

Lacey sat in a gray cardigan with her hands folded, looking small and wronged.

Beside her sat her mother, tall and silver-haired, in a cream jacket with a pin on the collar.

Brooke sat at the end with her phone face down, and she would not look at me.

Josh sat down on my left.

Wes stood against the wall by the door, because I had asked him to stand there and say nothing.

"Thank you for coming," I said. "I'll be quick."

I laid three folders on the table and slid one to the manager.

"These are your invoices. The venue deposit, the florist, the band. My name is on each of them, and so is my card."

"That's correct, Ms. Pruitt," the manager said, turning pages. "Fourteen thousand paid. And a nineteen-four upgrade charge that bounced Saturday."

"It was never approved. I've disputed it with my bank."

"Nora," Lacey's mother said. "We are in a business office. This is a family matter."

"It's a money matter. I'm making it in front of the person who holds the contract."

She pressed her lips together and sat back.

"As of today I've canceled every order under my card," I said. "The deposits I paid are mine. The venue can refund them to me, or the contract holder can reimburse me, and then keep the date."

"I'll reimburse you," her mother said at once. "A hundred times over. Lacey will not lose her wedding to a squabble."
