Chapter 6: Not Mixed With the Liver
I knocked on Cal's door at midnight, and he opened it before I finished the second knock.
He was in a gray T-shirt and old sweatpants, and his hair stuck up on one side.
"I was going to sleep," he said.
"You were not."
"I was thinking about sleeping." He stepped back. "Come in."
I sat at his kitchen table, across from the photo on the fridge, and told him.
Everything I had left out the night he fed me toast: that Maisie was the one with the failing liver, and that I was her only match.
Cal listened without moving.
When I finished, he got up, filled the kettle, and stood with his back to me while it ran.
"Does she know?" he asked.
"The doctor called her Monday and told her. She asked the doctor not to tell our parents."
"So Monday's when she found out."
"I think so."
"And she gave you five thousand dollars on Tuesday."
"I don't know that it was her."
"A girl who's three days into learning she's dying sends the sister her parents are praying over a note that says spend it on yourself." He turned around. "I know it's her."
I put my face in my hands.
"I don't understand her," I said. "She sat in the pew and let my father say it. She watched them pray over me and said nothing."
"Maybe she was scared."
"Maybe she's the favorite and she likes it."
He didn't answer that.
He set a mug in front of me and sat down.
"Can I tell you about my brother?" he said.
"You don't have to."
