Chapter 18: Tea
Jackie's POV
Clary texted me on a Tuesday in the middle of November, from the upstairs bathroom of the house on Chestnut Street.
She wants you for tea Thursday at four. Says if you come she'll "reconsider the statement." Don't. Or do. I'll be in the hall with a baseball bat.
I wrote back: You don't own a baseball bat.
I do now. Our housekeeper bought it.
I went on Thursday, in my gray suit.
Our housekeeper opened the door.
She held it wide, and as I passed she touched my sleeve, once, and said nothing, and looked past me at the stairs.
Clary sat on the third stair with a bat across her knees.
She raised it an inch in salute.
The drawing room had not changed in twenty-five years.
There were rose chintz sofas and a Persian rug, and my grandmother's silver tea service on the low table.
The portrait of the three of us hung over the mantel.
It had been painted when I was twelve.
There was now a second, smaller portrait of Clary beside it, still without a frame.
My mother sat on the sofa with her back straight and her hands folded.
"Jacqueline."
