Chapter 8: Dad Makes Me Sign

I got back to the house at four in the morning and found my sister in the kitchen.

Clem sat at the long counter in her robe with a mug of tea and the lights low.

"You're hurt," she said, seeing the blood on my sleeve.

"It's not mine."

I dropped the manifest on the counter in front of her.

She picked it up and read it, and her face emptied.

"That's my name," she said.

"On a shipment that was going to put Fergus Rainey in prison."

"I didn't sign this."

"It's your handwriting."

"It's my signature," she said, and put the paper down very gently. "That's different."

I waited.

She took a breath and her eyes filled.

"Dad makes me sign everything," she said. "Every week there's a stack. Leases, shipping orders, bank forms. He says it's easier if I'm the clerk, because nobody looks at a girl with a pen."

"You don't read them?"

"He says if I read them, I'll worry." She laughed, and it broke in the middle. "I thought it was a joke. I thought I was his good-luck charm."

"You run the books."

"I run what he gives me." She wiped her face on her sleeve. "Roz, I swear. I would never hurt someone who raised you. I'd never hurt you."

She slid off the stool and went to a drawer in the pantry.

She came back with a thick folder and opened it on the counter.

It was full of blank pages, every one with her signature in the same round hand at the bottom.
