Chapter 21: The Square

Seren stepped out of the cell and went straight to Corvus's bars.

The gaoler lifted his keys toward the lock.

"Not that one," Seren said.

Corvus looked at him through the bars.

"Seren."

"If you walk out of here tonight, you're a Varran outlaw loose in Highcourt. He'll have every guard in the city on you by morning."

"And if I don't, I hang."

"You go up on that scaffold at dawn," Seren said. "In front of everyone. And you trust me."

Corvus was quiet for a long moment.

Then he got up off the stone and came to the bars, and put his hand through them, and took the back of Seren's neck.

He pulled him in until the cold iron was against both their faces, and kissed him through it.

It was clumsy and hard and it hurt Seren's cheekbone, and he didn't care.

"I trusted you with a pass to anywhere," Corvus said against his mouth. "I can trust you with a rope."

The king's chamber smelled of tallow and old sickness.

Seren's father sat propped on pillows in the great bed, thinner than Seren had ever seen him, with his white hair loose and his eyes clear.
