Chapter 23: The Wend
Seren looked at the seal in his father's palm.
It was a small thing, a lump of gold with a crown cut into it, warm from Aldric's finger.
The levy had been sealed with it.
"Not that," he said.
The king frowned.
"You're my son. It should be yours."
"Third in it. Send for my sister. She's next, and she's never once burned anything."
The grey lord made a noise that might have been a laugh.
"I'll take the Wend," Seren said. "Both banks. That's the part I wrote about."
The king closed his thin fingers over the seal, and nodded.
Across the river, eight thousand Varrans who had no idea what they were saying cheered anyway, because Corvus had put his arm round Seren's waist.
They signed the peace in Hollin, in the chapel where the priest had once read Seren's letter to people with no bread.
It was a small stone room with a cracked bell, and it had never held so many lords.
