Chapter 5: House Call

Seven days.

I did the math out loud before I could stop myself.

"Seven days to the moon. Nineteen to my due date."

"Twelve days short," Emmett said. "Come inside."

His clinic was one bright room that smelled like cedar and rubbing alcohol.

There was an exam table with a quilt on it instead of paper, and jars of dried things on the shelves with handwritten labels.

Dagny went straight to the jars and started reading them.

My father stood in the doorway with his arms folded, filling it.

"Lie back," Emmett said. "I'm going to put my hands on you. Tell me to stop and I stop."

"You ask everybody that?"

"Everybody who's been chained to a rock this week."

I lay back.

He warmed his hands on a mug of tea first. Then he laid them flat on my belly, one high and one low.

For a second nothing happened.

Then I felt it.

Heat. Not from his skin. From under it.

His wolf, pressing up against his palms the way Rue used to press against my ribs when I was scared.

The pup rolled toward it.

She rolled toward his hand, and she kicked, once, hard enough that Emmett laughed under his breath.

"There you are," he said to my stomach. "Hi."

My eyes stung.

I looked at the ceiling until they stopped.

"She's hungry for a wolf," Emmett said. "She's been reaching for her mother's and getting nothing. I can't give her one. Nobody can. But I can keep her warm until hers comes home."

"How?"

"Like this. Every night, a couple of hours. More if she dips." He took his hands away and the heat went with them. "Which means I need to be close at night."

The doorway got darker somehow, though my father hadn't moved.

"Close," my father said.
