Chapter 17: The Order Above the Priest
The king's order lay face up on the forge table, and Ondel was already speaking as though the paper had come for him.
Aquas had not said a word since he turned it toward the gallery.
Ondel stepped up to the table and set both grey gloves flat on the wood.
'This is a lawful summons,' he said. 'I will carry the prince back under the king's peace before dawn.'
He said it to the room, not to Aquas, which was the first mistake.
Aquas did not answer him. He looked past the priest, at the gallery, and watched the smiths.
He watched which ones glanced at Ondel before they moved.
A smith at the rail spat on the floor.
A clerk bent over the ledger and studied it like it had grown new words.
Mossbeard folded his arms across his chest and stared at the priest without blinking.
