Chapter 20: The Pass Above the Gate
Aerial's war-party gathered beyond Pluto's half-open gate before dawn.
Aquas stood at the map table with his knife still in his hand.
They had come for the southern road.
He meant to give them the wrong one.
He reached over and turned Lucien's face from his own shoulder to the ridge above the gate.
Lucien stopped looking at the seeping wound.
Carrion was already up on the ridge stone, watching the ash line.
'They crossed in the dark,' Carrion said. 'No torches.'
Aquas set the carved marker down on the southern approach map.
He pressed it into the shelf pass, over the Saturn seal he had cut there.
'That is where we fight,' he said.
Durn came up the steps from the gate crew with her hammer across her back.
'They cut the ridge water cache,' she said. 'We are dry.'
A low sound went through the smiths along the gallery.
