Chapter 18: Halloween

Rhett set up the two lights on stands at the curb, aimed up the walk at the Alder Street porch.

He slid a gel into each one and tightened the clamps with a coin.

"Crimson on the left," he said. "Evergreen on the right. Same as the dance."

"You're sure about this."

"It's your dress. It's your porch tonight."

I had put the dress on in his bathroom, with the stiff hem and the faint streaks down the skirt.

It still looked white-gray to me.

I knew exactly what it looked like to everybody else.

I zipped the back myself, standing alone in front of his mirror, and then I came out and let him see me.

He took a long breath and didn't say anything.

"Tell me," I said.

"You look like you're about to take the building."

By ten o'clock there were fifty of us on the sidewalk.

My roommate was there, in a witch hat.

The girl from my literature class had come, and three of her friends.

Rhett's crew of student techs stood by with headsets around their necks, holding road cases.
