Chapter 20: The Hearing
The conduct hearing was held in the Union theater, because the board needed a room for the people who wouldn't stay home.
Monday at nine, every seat was taken.
Students stood along the walls with coffee, and a girl in the back row had brought a sleeping bag.
Four people sat at a long table on the stage, the dean in the middle, two professors beside her, and a student justice with a laptop.
Lance's father sat in the front row.
He had come alone, with no lawyer, and Lance sat next to him in a plain gray suit, with his hands folded.
I took a seat three rows behind with Rhett on my left and my brother on my right.
Milo sat at the end of the row, holding a paper cup and not drinking from it.
The dean tapped a microphone.
"This is an open session under the student government bylaws, because one party holds an office," she said. "We have two matters. We will do the shorter one first."
She turned a page.
"The complaint against Mr. Sandifer alleges improper use of union equipment and improper conduct with a student."
