They Dyed My Dress for the Dance. I Left the Group of Five novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: Moonlight
On the night of the ball I walked up the Union steps in the velvet dress with my own people on every side.
Colby was on my left in a rented suit that fit him better than the jersey had.
Milo was on my right with the library's clunky camera, which he had not put down in a week.
My roommate came behind us in a gold jacket.
The girl from my literature class came after her, with two friends and a paper corsage she'd made for me.
Rhett was already inside.
He'd been in the booth since noon, and I had gone up to see him once, just before the doors opened.
"What do you want it to be?" he'd asked, with his hand on the fader.
"All of it the same brightness. Nothing darker than anything else. Gold and white, like it was supposed to be."
"Nothing hiding."
"Nothing hiding," I said.
He had kissed me, then taken a long careful breath and said, "Go be the best-looking girl on the floor."
I walked through the ballroom doors at nine o'clock with my chin up.
The room glowed.
It was warm, even light, soft on every face, and no one in it looked like anything but themselves.
I stood still for a second, just to feel it.
Nobody laughed.
A girl I didn't know touched my sleeve, and said, "Your dress looks like night," and I thanked her, and I meant it.
Across the room, against the far wall, Lance stood alone.
He wasn't on the guest list for anything, but a ticket is a ticket.
