Chapter 17: Say It

Elora held the microphone in both hands and said nothing.

Twelve hundred people waited.

She looked at her mother, who had gone gray under the makeup, and then at the screen, which still showed white.

"It was supposed to be a scare," she said.

Her voice came out thin, and the speakers made it enormous.

"I wanted to see her face. She always has that face, the one that says she's the good one."

"Elora, stop," Constance said, with no microphone and no breath. "You are not well. Stop talking."

"You told me to keep the chair, Mother."

A sound moved through the front rows.

"You said the money would stop if I stood up. You said nobody would ever look at me if I wasn't hurt."

"That's enough."

"I hurt my back for real, and it healed in eight months, and you said stay in it." Elora's voice cracked. "I did what you told me. I always do."

"Mother's a liar," a woman said clearly, somewhere in the dark.

Elora flinched, and swung around to the lectern.

"And you," she said. "Say something."

Colin had his hands in his pockets and his mouth open.

"Ellie, don't."

"I called you from that car, minutes before it hit. You knew."

"I didn't know what you meant to do."

"You drove to the hospital and held my hand and let her say sorry." She laughed, a wet, ugly sound. "You've been in my bed for fourteen months. Tell them."

"Ellie."

"Say it, Colin."
