Chapter 21: The Luna's Crown
They crowned me three weeks after Midwinter, in the throne hall where he had once told me the law.
The black throne had a second chair beside it now, in white stone.
Nobody had ever sat in it.
I stood at the foot of the dais in a long grey gown, and my knees were not quite steady.
"You can still refuse," Torin said softly, beside me.
"I'm not refusing."
"I know. I wanted to say it once more."
"You've said it every day this week."
"Twice a day," he said softly.
The doors opened, and the hall filled from the back.
I had asked for one thing, and Ferris had arranged it without a question.
The cadets came first.
Every cadet in the Academy walked in two by two, in dress grey, and lined both walls.
I saw the faces that had sneered at me on Rank Day.
A tall boy in the front row looked straight at me, and his ears were red.
The sergeant called the room to attention.
Ferris climbed the dais with a plain silver band on a black cushion.
"By the authority of the Crown," she said, and her voice rang off the stone, "the Silver Wolf, Nessa Carrow, is named Luna of the Southern Territory."
She lifted the band.
I knelt, and she set it on my head.
It was light.
I had expected it to be heavy.
"Rise, Your Grace," Ferris said under her breath, and her mouth was twitching.
I rose.
I turned to face the hall.
For a second, nobody did anything.
Then the tall boy in the front row stepped out of the line.
