Chapter 23: The Open Door
"You have one," I said.
Mom came out onto the porch and shut the screen door behind her without a sound.
She stood a long way off, against the far rail.
"I've been trying to find where to begin," she said.
"Begin anywhere."
"I don't remember your favorite color."
I turned my head.
She was not looking at me.
"I went through the whole house," she said. "I looked at your room, your shelves, your closet. There's nothing in it that says what you like. There's nothing. I thought you were easy."
"I was quiet."
"I know that now."
"You told people I was well-behaved."
"I did," Mom said. "I thought it was a kindness."
She pressed her knuckles to her mouth, and her shoulders shook once.
I did not go to her.
"I don't have a good reason," she said. "I looked at your sister, and she glowed, and I thought that was what a child was for. I thought you were the one who didn't need anything."
"I needed everything."
"I know."
"I needed someone to ask me what my wolf did."
"I know," she said, and she wept openly now. "I should have asked. I should have asked a hundred times. I'm not asking you to say it's all right."
"Good."
"I'm only asking if I'm allowed to try."
I looked out at the dark road.
It was the road I had run down at five in the morning for two years, to get to work.
"It's green," I said.
She looked up.
"My favorite color. Dark green. The color of the library door before they painted it brown."
