Chapter 9: The Parchment

The throne hall was bigger than my entire pack's meeting house, and it was empty.

White stone floor, a black stone throne, and a long table under a skylight.

Torin Redmayne stood at the table with his back to me.

A rolled scroll lay beside him, tied with grey cord.

On the table, under the light, lay a sheet of royal parchment.

I knew it at once.

My own handwriting ran across the top.

My name was signed at the bottom, and next to it was a round silver seal, bright as a coin.

Beside mine, pressed into the same sheet, was a second silver seal.

It was larger, and it held a crown.

"Sit," the King said.

"I'd rather stand."

"As you like."

He turned around.

His face was very controlled.

"Miss Carrow, do you remember what you wrote on this?"

"I wrote a pledge to the Royal Military Academy."

"You wrote that on the parchment," he said. "You sealed it with your aura."

"Yes."

He untied the scroll and read from it himself.

"By the Old Law of the Lycan Crown, Article Nine," he said in a flat voice. "A wolf of the Silver blood who presses her aura into a seal on royal parchment offers herself in bond to the Crown."

My ears began to ring.

"If the Crown returns its own seal on the same sheet, the offer is accepted," he went on, "and the Silver Wolf is the betrothed of the Lycan King from that moment.
