Chapter 6: Two Guests

They put Lucrezia in the blue guest suite on the second floor.

They put me in a narrow room off the kitchen, with a cot, a sink and a window onto the trash cans.

A maid brought me towels and apologized twice.

"The Don said a guest room," she said. "Mrs. Ostuni said you'd be more comfortable here."

"Which Mrs. Ostuni?"

"The one who said you were a guest."

I thanked her and sat on the cot.

At ten the next morning, a man knocked and told me the Don was waiting in his study.

The study was lined with green leather books.

The Don sat behind a huge desk. Gianluca stood by the window with his hands behind his back.

My father was there too, in the chair nearest the Don. He did not look at me.

Lucrezia sat across from him in a cream dress, holding a tissue.

"Here is how this will go," the Don said. "I won't ask your family who you are. Families lie, and I know that. I'll ask you to do what I asked of the one I was promised."

He laid a single sheet of paper on the blotter.

"A page from my own warehouse accounts. I keep four men who check it, and they've told me it's clean. Tell me where it isn't."

He slid it halfway to me and halfway to Lucrezia.

It was a column of numbers in a clerk's cramped hand, forty lines of cargo weights and fees and totals.

Lucrezia leaned in and held her tissue very still.

I did not touch the paper.

I read the column once from top to bottom, the way I read my father's register every Sunday, and then I read it once from the bottom up.

"Line fourteen," I said.

The Don said nothing.

"The clerk wrote four thousand one hundred seventy-six. The two lines under it add up to four thousand seven hundred sixteen."
