Chapter 20: The Family Silver
A man in a gray suit came up the walk behind the deputy, carrying a briefcase and the expression of a person who has been told the neighborhood is dangerous.
He was Hortense's lawyer.
I had met him at six Christmas parties and he had never once remembered my name.
"Mrs. Villere," he said. "I took the liberty of coming along to explain the complaint. It would be simpler if you accepted the paper today."
"It says Lundi Gras," Mama said.
"It does. But to avoid the unpleasantness of a public service..."
"You mean the service on my daughter in front of a hundred and fifty people."
"I mean," said the lawyer, "that it is a serious accusation."
"Eleven pieces of Villere sterling, a tureen and a Georgian tea service are missing from the dining room."
"The family has reason to believe they were taken the day of the Twelfth Night party, in a suitcase."
I looked at Mama's porch.
At the single suitcase I'd carried out that night.
"I took a nightgown, three skirts, my mother's recipe cards and a plastic baby," I said. "You can search the suitcase."
"The family prefers a formal inquiry."
