Chapter 14: The First Mrs. Paoli

Ruggero didn't run at once.

He tried one more thing first. He laughed.

"This is a clerical error," he said to the room. "A man with a stamp pad, a bad filing system and a grudge."

"I have her driver's license," said the man in the grey coat.

He took a folded sheet from his pocket and held it out toward Donata.

She didn't take it. My lawyer did, read it, and kept her face perfectly still.

"Nevada," my lawyer said. "A woman with the surname Paoli. The address is the one on his old lease."

"Ruggero," Donata said.

"She's my ex-wife."

"Which is it? Ex or wife?"

He wet his lips.

"We separated years ago. We never actually filed. It was a formality, Donata. A piece of paper."

I thought of how he had said those same words to me about my own shares.

"A piece of paper," Donata repeated.

Her voice had gone very quiet.

"I signed a marriage license in front of a judge in March. I changed my name on the company accounts."

"It doesn't change anything between us."

"It changes everything," my lawyer said, loud enough for the first rows. "A second marriage while the first is still legal is void. Donata was never married to him at all."

Someone in the third row gasped.

"Eight months," the old white-haired buyer said, to nobody. "He sat at my table at the spring tasting and called her his wife."
