Chapter 19: The Knife
"Nobody moves," said Marigold.
Her voice carried down the wall, light and clear and perfectly steady.
"Not the Queen, not the council, not the Skarn horses, not my brother."
"If anyone takes a step, I open his throat."
The knife lay flat against my father's neck, and his head lolled over her arm.
His eyes were open.
They moved from face to face on the ground below, and they stopped on my mother, and stayed.
"Conroy is coming," said the captain at my elbow.
Hooves rang on the stones of the bridge.
My husband came off the span at a gallop and flung himself down at the foot of the gatehouse.
He started for the stair door.
I put my hand flat on his chest.
"No."
"She is my sister."
"She will cut him the moment she sees your face," I said. "Let me."
His jaw worked.
He unbuckled his sword belt and let it fall to the cobbles with a clang.
The lords behind us drew in their breath.
