They Gave My Place to Her, So I Vanished With His Child novel · Chapter 4 of 24

Chapter 4: Saturdays Only

"She's four," I said.

Douglas did the math, and I watched it land on his face.

Four years ago in March, the last month we were together.

"Ivy," he said.

"Philip, go home."

"I'll wait at the corner," Philip said.

He walked back to the black car and stood beside it with his hands in his pockets, close enough to hear us if he wanted.

I carried Polly up the stairs.

Douglas followed me.

On the second landing I turned around.

"This is a private building. You can stand there or go home."

"Is she mine?"

"She's mine."

"That isn't what I asked."

"It's what I'm answering."

His hand went flat on the stair rail.

"Four years," he said. "I called your phone every day for a month. It went to a recording. Then the bank said the account was closed. I thought you'd done something to yourself."

"You stopped calling," I said.

"I got a letter from the city that said you were dead. What was I supposed to do?"

"That was two years ago. And you ended it by phone, Douglas. You said I'd become somebody you didn't know."

His face did something terrible and went still.

"I said that."

"You said it the morning after Felicity fell. You never once asked what happened on the stairs."

"I thought I knew what happened."

"That's what I mean."

On my shoulder, Polly made a small sound and sat up.
