Chapter 19: The Third Floor

Elena's POV

I stopped at my own door first.

"One minute," I told Luca, and he nodded and stayed in the hall.

Valentina opened it in my sweatshirt, with her hair stuck up on one side.

I put my phone in her hand.

"Housing opens at eight. The number is on your email. Tell them the truth, ask for a payment plan, and don't cry unless you actually need to."

"Where are you going?"

"To be somewhere else for a while."

Her eyes went past me to Luca, then back.

For once she didn't say anything clever.

"Okay," she said. "Thank you."

I shut the door and took Luca's hand again.

His room was the only single on the floor, at the end past the stairwell.

It had a narrow bed, a desk covered in papers, a window with a crooked blind, and a shelf of paperbacks with cracked spines.

The lock turned with a quiet click.

He leaned back against the door, and I could see he was nervous.

"I haven't done this in my room before," he said. "Ever. It's the one rule I never broke."

"Then why now?"

"Because I'd like to be the person you can trust in it."

I crossed the room and put both hands on his chest.

"I'm eighteen," I said. "I've never done this with anyone. I'm not scared of it, Luca. I'm tired of being the only one in my life who isn't allowed to want things."

His breath went out of him.

"Then want things," he said. "Tell me what."

"Kiss me."

He did.

It started slow, his mouth soft on mine, his hand coming up to cradle my jaw.

Then he made a low sound in his throat, and it stopped being slow.

He turned us, and my back met the door, and his body pressed against mine, warm and solid and shaking just slightly.

I got my hands under the hem of his shirt and found bare skin, hot and smooth over hard muscle.

He hissed through his teeth.

"Your hands are cold."

"Warm them up."

He laughed against my mouth, and then he stopped laughing, because I dragged my nails lightly down his stomach.
