Chapter 17: Mother's Hand
I closed it.
The latch clicked, and the house went silent around us.
My mother stood up from my father's desk and walked to the window.
She stood with her back to me, looking out at the oleanders, her hands folded at her waist.
"Are you recording this?" she asked.
I took my phone out and laid it face up on the desk, the screen dark.
"No," I said. "I'm not Damon."
She turned her head a little at his name.
"Sit down," she said. "You're gray."
"I'll stand."
"You always would." She drew a breath. "Fine."
"He came to me in October. Your father was forgetting his pills. The hotel was short."
"Damon said he could find us a bridge. Something to carry us until your father was well."
"Fourteen million dollars, against the flagship. Paid back in a year. Nobody needed to worry him with it."
"And it needed a second director's signature," I said.
"Yours." She said it to the glass. "You own a fifth of the building, and you were in Houston, and you weren't speaking to anyone."
