Chapter 14: The Offer Letter

My mother called Kate's landline at nine on Sunday morning.

Neither of us had given her the number.

Kate looked at the ringing phone on the counter and then at me.

"Answer it," she said. "Put it on speaker."

"Miles," my mother said. Her voice was warm and rested. "Good. Don't hang up. I'm not angry."

"Where are you?"

"Home. My flight landed last night, and now I'm in my own kitchen with my own coffee. I want to make this simple, because you like simple."

I said nothing.

"Come home Tuesday. Walk into the hospital with me. I'll drop the police report this afternoon."

"You haven't filed it yet?"

"I'm holding it as a courtesy." She let that sit. "I'll also return the sixty-one thousand, and your father will sign the letter that withdraws my lawyer's demand. I'll even pay the party bill."

"With what?"

"With the sixty-one thousand, sweetheart. It's your money. You're just getting it back."

Kate's mouth went tight.

"And Brooke?" I said.

"Brooke is Trevor's. You've moved on, so has she. But I'll make sure she apologizes in person."

"And if I say no?"

"Then Friday comes anyway," my mother said pleasantly. "And you'll have lost your money, your job and your name. You'll be a thief who left his brother to die. Think carefully."

I looked at Kate.

She did not tell me what to do.

She stood very still with her arms crossed, and I understood she was making herself keep out of it.

I picked up my own phone.

"Mom," I said. "I'm going to hang up now."

"Miles, don't you dare."

I opened my contacts.

I held the screen so Kate could see it.

I deleted my mother's number, then her sister's, then her lawyer's.

I deleted the church.

I deleted the aunt who had sent me a recipe every month for ten years.

I deleted the cousin who had never once asked how I was.

"What are you doing?" my mother said, tinny on the speaker. "I can hear you tapping."

"Saying no."
